FAQ – Bycatch (Non-Target Capture) in Aurotrap
Modified on Mon, 9 Feb at 3:35 PM
Is bycatch possible in an Aurotrap?
Yes. An Aurotrap is placed on the ground and has entry openings designed to allow rodents to pass through the trap. Through these openings, leaves, snow, rain, and other environmental elements may enter the trap. Non-target animals may also enter unintentionally.
By design, any strike trap must be activated by movement. Since Aurotrap is sensor-driven, there are situations where strong wind, heavy rain, hail, snow, or moving debris such as leaves can interfere with the sensors and unintentionally trigger the strike mechanism. In addition, birds or other small non-target animals may seek shelter inside the trap and, in rare cases, be killed.
Bycatch is therefore not uncommon in principle. It is important to emphasize that Aurotrap should only be deployed in areas where rodent control is intended—primarily for rats. The trap cannot currently distinguish between target and non-target activity once the sensors are triggered, and a certain margin of error must be expected.
To minimize unintended activations, correct placement is critical, and the sensors must be kept clean and free from debris. Proper maintenance and installation provide the best conditions for effective control of target rodents while reducing the risk of non-target capture.
